Holistic Cannabis Network co-founder Donna Shields offers healthy recipes and advice in The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook

The Joy of Cooking for Cannabis is what Robyn Griggs Lawrence set out to do with her recently published The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook: Feel-Good Food for Home Cooks.

Lawrence comes by her interest in cannabis naturally — literally naturally — since she once edited Natural Home Magazine and is attracted by marijuana’s antioxidant properties as well as its better known psychoactive effects.

She hadn’t tried marijuana since college, but as her menstrual cramps and what she calls the “hormonal insanity” that surrounded them worsened, her doctor suggested she try medical marijuana.


She sought to find a cookbook that would outline cooking at home with medical marijuana, but came up empty handed. That was in 2009. As a result of her dissatisfaction with the caliber of available cookbooks, she began recruiting recipe developers and seeking expertise from individuals in the industry.

“It’s not your mother’s cannabis anymore,” she says. “Not only is it insanely stronger. I realized this is an herb. This is food.”

Cannabis does not only have to be used as a medical herb, but also as a culinary additive. Its benefits include both antioxidants and flavor, giving the recipe a different yet satisfying taste.
